Who has thoughts, knowledge, experience concerning Atlanta?

asked:

I’m leaving for ATL tomorrow, will stay through end of July. Partially vacation with family moving there, but I want to look around with an eye toward staying (or at least having that option).

1) ECONOMY: What’s the economy like? What sorts of companies? I’ve been Fortune 50 down to 5 person start-up and places in between – primarily management (not an engineer or techie) in communications/ hi-tech/ media. What’s the Atlanta market hold for mid-career person with this experience?

2) PRACTICAL QUALITY OF LIFE: What’s crime like? Is downtown alive or dead after rush hour? Where’s cool to live (45, hetero single M)? What is normal business attire in the summer – am I gonna be harangued if I wear just a blazer and tie instead of a full suit when I meet people?

3) SOCIAL/INTELLECTUAL QUALITY OF LIFE: What’s dating life like (45, hetero male)? What’s the political sensibility (in Atlanta specifically, in greater Atlanta, in Georgia overall)? What passes for entertainment?

Thx?

Relocation To Atlanta

Atlanta (proper, not the burbs) is great for singles. No, the city doesn’t roll up the sidewalks after rush hour, there’s a variety of night life – neighborhoods in and around the city limits are great places and usually have a pub or club nearby no matter which one you choose. Entertainment is whatever you want it to be. Theatre, outdoor recreation, music, dancing .. if folks are bored in Atlanta it’s because they’re boring!

Blazer is fine, polo shirt – if you wear a suit n tie in August and you’re at a casual function – you’ll be uncomfortable and hot.

Crime is dependent on where you live. Don’t move to a neighborhood that has bars on every window and you’ll be fine (as long as some stalkin’ ex doesn’t hunt you down).

There’s a broad field of tech companies in the city, everything from HP to CNN, and no shortage of jobs for qualified personnel.

Political sensibility will vary with individuals (again, as long as you aren’t in the suburbs). Everyone I know in the ‘burbs is a Republican.
